SQUIRRELS | Feeding responsibly: how to do It right
In autumn and winter, natural food sources for squirrels aren’t always abundant. Although they store supplies for the colder months, a shortage of nuts or seeds can make extra food a valuable supplement.
Feeding can especially help young or weak squirrels, ensuring they have enough energy to make it through winter.
However, it’s important to feed in moderation. If squirrels are fed too often, they can become dependent on humans. The goal of feeding is to support, not replace, their natural foraging behavior.
What can you offer?
If you’d like to give squirrels a helping hand, offer food that matches their natural diet. Good options include:
- Unsalted, unroasted nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, pine nuts)
- Large seeds
- Pieces of fruit or vegetables, such as carrot, apple, or corn on the cob
- Fresh drinking water
- Garvo 1060 alfamix squirrel – a varied mix of nuts, seeds, and grains carefully balanced to meet squirrels’ natural nutritional needs
Make sure the food stays dry and clean. Damp or moldy food can be harmful to the animals.
Avoid storing fruit or vegetables in a closed feeder — place them on a separate dish instead. Nuts, however, can be kept in a storage box as long as they remain dry.
The right place for feeding
A safe feeding location makes a big difference. Ideally, use a squirrel feeder and hang it at least two meters high, close to trees or shrubs. This allows squirrels to escape easily if they sense danger and keeps them out of reach of cats.
Clean the feeder regularly and let it dry thoroughly before refilling it. Moisture can cause mold and spoil the food.
When to feed squirrels
Autumn is the most important time to provide extra food. During this season, squirrels gather and store their winter supplies — and a little extra nutrition can help them build these reserves.
Feeding can also be helpful in winter, when snow or frost makes natural food difficult to find. Offering a little extra nourishment during the coldest months can make a real difference.
