Backyard Chickens
Chickens are always busy and bring life and activity to any garden. They are both practical and enjoyable pets, each with its own unique personality, and many become surprisingly tame. Whether you keep chickens for fresh eggs or simply enjoy their company, a healthy, active flock is always the priority.
Feeding chickens is rewarding because they are enthusiastic eaters. Most chickens have a tendency to overeat and will often pick out their favourite grains or pellets first. It is important to prevent them from becoming overweight, especially during periods when they are not laying eggs. Lean hens return to laying more easily.
To remain strong, healthy, and full of vitality, chickens need all the nutrients provided in their feed – including those ingredients they may be less inclined to eat. Garvo offers a wide range of feeds to ensure every chicken receives complete and balanced nutrition.
Fresh Eggs from Your Own Hens
An egg develops its full flavour about three days after it has been laid. Very fresh eggs are also more difficult to peel because the membrane still clings tightly to the inside of the shell.
Tip: Write the laying date on the shell with a soft pencil. Store eggs in a cool place outside the refrigerator whenever possible. Because eggshells are porous, eggs can dry out in the refrigerator or absorb odours from other foods. Eggs generally taste best and are easiest to peel between three and ten days after they have been laid.
Mash, Pellets and Grain Mixes
Garvo complete chicken feeds contain everything a chicken needs for a healthy diet, including grains for energy, proteins for growth and maintenance, and vitamins and minerals to support overall health.
Complete feeds are available as mash or pellets.
Mash has a coarse, even texture that stimulates the chicken’s gizzard, encouraging natural grinding of the feed and promoting healthy digestion. For this reason, mash is often preferred over pellets, unless chickens begin to eat selectively or soil their feathers while feeding.
Pellets help prevent selective feeding and reduce feed waste because every pellet contains the same balanced nutrients. However, chickens may sometimes consume more pellets than they need.
When changing from mash to pellets -or vice versa- it is advisable to allow your chickens time to adapt gradually.
In addition to mash and pellet feeds, Garvo also offers a wide range of grain mixes that are ideal for supplementing the daily diet. Several of these blends are enriched with protein- and mineral-rich pellets, as well as poultry grit, providing even more complete nutrition for healthy, productive chickens.
voederadvies
- feed fresh food daily and offer only the amount your chicks or chickens can consume. This helps prevent selective feeding and feed waste
- always make sure your chickens have access to insoluble grit (gizzard grit) and oyster shell grit, unless these are already included in the complete feed
- provide fresh, clean drinking water every day
